These Are Your New Favorite Bands:
 |
The Coathangers (4:20)
Atlanta darlings The Coathangers are poised to become the nation’s, when Suicide Squeeze releases their second album, Scramble, April 7th. A somersault forward, if their eponymous debut was the sound of four girls finding their way in a mess of avant-amateur musical mayhem, then Scramble refines it with the intuition of a fully congealed band. And they’re still freakin’ hilarious.

The Cynics (3:25)
The Cynics have been one of America’s best bands for over two decades. Their core remains rock-solid guitarist Gregg Kostelich -- founder of Get Hip Records -- and Michael Kastelic, surely among rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest frontmen. The Pittsburgh veterans’ latest LP, Here We Are, expanded their signature garage-rock sound. They’ll play a rare acoustic set at our shindig.

The Luchagors (2:30)
The Luchagors rattle the rafters with breathless, infectious, three-minute pop-punk outbursts. Singer Amy Dumas -- a onetime pro-wrestler, notorious on the WWE circuit -- is a blur of flailing motion onstage, pacing, spinning, and leaping into the crowd as if from the top rope of a ring. Skid Row’s Rachel Bolan produced the Atlanta quartet’s self-titled debut.

Twin Tigers (1:35)
Twin Tigers deliver a darkly-hued deluge of meaty psychedelic rock. Elements of shoe-gaze enter the equation, but these Athens, GA scruff-heads exude a scrappier, more passionate vibe. With an EP, Curious Faces/Violet Future, self-released last year, they have a 7-inch newly pressed, and a full album expected later this year on Old Flame Records.

Dancer vs. Politician (12:40)
With divisions in Berlin and Athens, GA, Dancer vs. Politician bring a central European flavor to their delicate, organic pop. Striking German-born vocalist, Sanni Baumgärtner, casts a poised, seductive spell, bringing to mind the iconic Nico, albeit with a softer touch. Their debut CD, A City Half-Lost, includes songs in both English and German, plus a Nikki Sudden cover..

Carol Bui (11:55)
A Washington, D.C. favorite, Carol Bui earned raves for 2007’s Everyone Wore White, a bold, intelligent rock record balanced by ample “beauty and nuance,” as Pitchfork put it. Obvious P.J. Harvey comparisons are not necessarily inaccurate. Like Harvey, Bui keeps you guessing, launching from a tense post-punk blast into a traditional Vietnamese a capella song with natural ease.

The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir (11:10)
Contrary to their name, The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir describe themselves as “a chambery folky punky band based in Chicago.” Belle and Sebastian’s influence is clear, but there’s a gruffer, ramshackle, working-class vibe here, reminiscent of The Mekons. That band’s Sally Timms, along with Kelly Hogan, guested on their ’07 self-titled album for Bloodshot, which Spin.com called “a hug for the downtrodden.”
